Hot Oil Treatment: Why, When, and How

Let's talk scalp care! When trying to track down the culprit for hair loss, brittle hair, damaged hair, or breakable hair it usually starts with the scalp. In this post we will focus on the Hot Oil Treatment. We will discuss the benefits, when you should consider getting one, how to do one at home, and product recommendation. This treatment is not necessarily age specific, but how you warm up the oil should be tempered to the age of the person you are applying this to. This is not "hair type" specific either. I will address why I put hair type in quotes on another post. 😏 Moving along...…

Why would I get a hot oil treatment?

When you have the opportunity to have a professional hair service an examination of your scalp should be the opening act. But that does not mean you can only get this treatment at the salon.  You will feel warning signs that you are due for an hot oil treatment, like: dryness, itchiness, and usually it links up with season changes (summer, fall, spring and winter). When aging your hair and scalp tend to be drier too.

How do I do a hot oil treatment?

We already covered Hair Care 101: Shampooing and Conditioning using that process first we stick this step in before 5. Let's call this one 4A: Adding hot oil product. I use CHI: Black Seed Hot Oil in my hot oil treatments at M2GH Salon. So for this step you have just rinsed out the shampoo thoroughly (step 4).  You will apply hot oil to the scalp and massage it in. Then you can proceed with step 5 and 5A. For this process to work it should be coupled with a deep condition. Proceed all the way to step 6.

What are the benefits of a hot oil treatment?

The benefits of a hot oil treatment are too numerous to name them all. But I will give the top reasons I recommend hot oil treatments to my clients:

  • Moisturize the scalp
  • Fight against dandruff
  • Heal the Scalp
  • Fight against inflammation of the scalp
  • Reduces split ends
  • Reduces Frizz
  • Promote hair growth by increasing blood flow
  • Moisturizes hair

When is a hot oil treatment not beneficial?

Some of reasons I mentioned to get a hot oil treatment might rise to the level of needing to seek a dermatologist. This is when and why having a hair care professional as part of your routine is greatly beneficial. Some things I cannot describe or explain clearly enough that we all walk away with the same understanding. So what I will say is if the dryness, dandruff, and inflammation is more than uncomfortable seek medical attention if you are not going involve a hair care professional. Sometimes you just have to put eyes and hands on the situation to make a determination.

As always we want to empower everyone to learn about hair care and create healthy hair habits. This will ensure you retain length if you so desire and above all else have healthy hair. I hope this was beneficial.
